HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME TO BE ABLE TO DEFEND MYSELF ON THE STREET?

Each person, being an individual, progresses at his/her own speed.  Some start out fast and slow down.  Others start slowly and progress rapidly.  Usually, after about 6 months, you will find that the ability to defend yourself has increased greatly.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I PRACTICE?

Physically, not less than 3 times per week in class and at least 1/2 hour for the days not in class.  This also applies to mental training.

WHY IS THERE SO MUCH EMPHASIS ON MENTAL TRAINING?

Discipline is the forerunner of self-discipline, humility, and knowledge.  Imagine what your life would be like without discipline.  Remember, you cannot have a martial art without discipline.  Oriental cultures knew something thousands of years ago that the western world is just starting to accept; that is, “The mind rules the body.”  Nothing in life is accomplished without the mind.  The martial arts develop a positive attitude and an open mind.  These are some of the reasons that the martial arts are 90% mental.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME TO LEARN EVERYTHING ABOUT THE MARTIAL ARTS?

Can you fit into one lifetime what has evolved over thousands of years?  The martial arts are not something you take a course in or hope to learn from a book; it is something that must become a part of your everyday life.

WILL MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING EFFECT MY EDUCATION?

It should enhance your academic education.  This is due partly because of the discipline aspect required in the martial arts.  Should your grades drop, the instructor will request that you leave, until such time as your grades improve.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO BE PROMOTED?

When you have earned the privilege to test, your instructor will select you for testing.  Your promotion depends on your passing the test before a certified American Kang Duk Won instructor.

WHY MUST I BOW BEFORE ENTERING AND LEAVING THE TRAINING AREA?

It is a sign of respect, not only for your school but also for your fellow students and instructors.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STYLES?

Belief in certain adopted techniques; rules and political boundaries establish the basic differences in martial arts styles.

WHICH MARTIAL ART STYLE IS THE BEST?

No style is better or worse than another.  Each style contributes to the whole of the martial arts.

WHICH IS THE OLDEST STYLE OF MARTIAL ARTS?

There is much debate on this subject.  Most likely, the Chinese and/or Indian styles of martial arts are the oldest.  Some of the ancient Chinese texts of over 2000 years refer to an ancient form of fighting that united the mind and body to function as a single unit.

DO MARTIAL ARTS REQUIRE A LOT OF STRENGTH?

No, knowledge substitutes for strength.  It isn't how strong you are, it is how efficiently you utilize the strength you do have.

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN SELECTING A MARTIAL ARTS SCHOOL?

Two of the essential items to look for are discipline and respect.  Without these two elements you cannot have the proper atmosphere conducive to learning or teaching.  There should be no less than 15 minutes of warm-up exercises, not to exceed 30 minutes.  Too much time spent on exercises may dictate the lack of knowledge on the instructor's part.  By doing kicks, blocks, and punches you are, in fact, exercising.  There should be no requirement to sign any type of financial contract for a long period of time with the school.  Contracts do not benefit the student in any way.  What happens if the school goes out of business or the student gets sick or has to move out of the area?

WHAT HAPPENS IF A “BULLY” ENROLLS IN A MARTIAL ARTS CLASS?

Normally one of two things happens.  Either they quit after a few lessons because they will not put up with the strict discipline required, or their attitude changes and they begins to realize that any person can be dangerous regardless of size.

DOESN'T THE MARTIAL ARTS TEACH A PERSON HOW TO FIGHT?

We teach people how not to fight; we fight only as a last resort.  The martial arts teach you how to avoid fighting through self-discipline and self-confidence.  The person who has little confidence in their abilities has to try to prove how good they are.  When you have self-confidence, you only have to prove things to yourself.  A person that cannot cope mentally usually resorts to physical violence.  Think about this statement.

CAN PHYSICALLY INCONVENIENCED PERSONS LEARN MARTIAL ARTS?

Why not?  Of course, every handicap can be overcome with patience from the student and instructor.  Some people think age is a handicap.  It can be only if the person wants it to be.
